What does solar actually cost in the Tampa Bay area?
There is no single price, because the number of panels you need depends on how much electricity you already use. A typical Tampa Bay home runs somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 kilowatt-hours a month, and the system that offsets that usage is sized around it. What we do on the first visit is pull twelve months of your utility history from TECO, Duke Energy or your co-op, look at the roof planes that actually get sun, and give you the installed price in writing along with the monthly payment if you finance it. No square-foot guesses and no numbers that change after the site survey.
Do you install the roof and the solar, or just one of them?
Both, and they are separate scopes of work. We are a licensed solar contractor and we do roofing, so if your shingles have less than about ten years left we will tell you before anyone puts a panel on them. You can buy the roof by itself, the solar by itself, or package the two together so one crew handles the sequence, one permit set moves through the county, and you are not chasing two companies when something needs a warranty call.
How long does a solar installation take from signing to switch-on?
The install itself is usually one to three days on the roof. The calendar time is dominated by permitting and utility interconnection, which in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Polk counties typically adds four to ten weeks depending on the jurisdiction and how busy the utility's interconnection queue is. We carry the permit applications, the inspections and the utility paperwork ourselves so you are not standing in line at a building department.
What happens to my power bill after solar in Florida?
You do not stop getting a bill. Florida's net metering rules mean your utility still charges a monthly customer charge and any minimum fees, and you still pay for whatever electricity you pull from the grid at night beyond what your credits cover. What changes is the size of the energy charge. Most of our customers see their usage charge drop substantially and, in high-production months, bank credits that carry into the next billing cycle. We show you the projected bill next to your current bill so the comparison is apples to apples.
Do I need a battery to keep my lights on in a hurricane?
Yes, if backup is the goal. A grid-tied solar array without storage shuts down when the utility loses power — that is a safety requirement so line crews are not working on an energized line. If you want power during an outage you need either a battery like a Tesla Powerwall or an Enphase system, or a standby generator. Batteries are quiet and handle short outages well; a whole-home generator is the better answer if you want to run air conditioning for days. We install both and we will tell you honestly which one fits your loads.
What financing options do you offer?
We work with lenders and lease providers that cover most credit profiles, including EnFin and Skylight for leases, Participate for prepaid leases, and Sungage and Credit Human for loans. A prepaid lease lets you pay the term up front and take a lower lifetime cost; a monthly lease keeps the maintenance and production risk with the provider. We will lay out the payment, the escalator if there is one, and the total cost across the term for each option side by side before you pick anything.
Which areas around Tampa do you serve?
We cover the Tampa Bay region and most of Central Florida — Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Manatee, Hernando, Sumter, Lake, Orange, Seminole, Osceola and Marion counties among them. That includes Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Brandon, Riverview, Lakeland, Wesley Chapel, Sarasota, Ocala, The Villages, Orlando and the towns in between. We do not work in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale market.
Are you licensed and insured in Florida?
Yes. Origin holds Florida electrical contractor license EC13012465 and carries general liability and workers' compensation coverage. Every permit we pull is under our own license, and the electrical work is performed by our own certified crews rather than rotating subcontractors. You can ask for a certificate of insurance at any point and we will send it the same day.
Will solar panels damage my roof or void the roof warranty?
Not when the attachments are flashed correctly. Panels are mounted to the rafters with lag bolts through flashed penetrations, which is the same detail a plumbing vent uses. On shingle roofs we use a flashed mount rated for the wind zone; on metal roofs we can often clamp to the standing seam with no penetration at all. If your roof is still under a manufacturer warranty we confirm the approved attachment method before we quote, and our own workmanship warranty covers the penetrations we make.
Do you handle panel removal and reinstall for a roof replacement?
Yes, and it is one of the most common calls we get. If you already have solar and the roof needs to be replaced, we detach the array, store the equipment safely, re-roof, then reset the panels, re-flash every penetration and re-commission the system so it reports production the way it did before. Because we hold the electrical license, the reconnection and any inverter reconfiguration is done in-house instead of being handed to a third party.
How much maintenance does a solar system need in Florida?
Very little mechanically, but Florida weather does two things worth watching: pollen and dust reduce output in spring, and afternoon storms are hard on anything loose. Rain handles most of the cleaning. What matters more is monitoring — if a single microinverter or optimizer fails, production drops quietly and most homeowners never notice on their bill. We set up production monitoring at commissioning so a drop gets flagged rather than discovered a year later.
